Avocado Mattress Reviews
Founded in 2016, Avocado specializes in eco-friendly mattresses and bedding made from sustainably sourced and organic materials. Avocado is perhaps best known for its Green flagship model, a hybrid mattress which is also available in a Vegan option. In addition, the company produces a crib mattress made from certified organic materials.
The Avocado Green mattress and the Vegan mattress model cost the same, and differ solely in their covers. Unlike the Green mattress, the Vegan option’s cover does not contain wool. Both mattresses include a 2-inch Dunlop latex comfort layer atop a zoned support core. Made from 8-inch steel coils and an additional 1-inch latex layer, the breathable core allows for plenty of air circulation. The coils also give the mattress a firm feel, making it an ideal choice for heavier sleepers and customers seeking neck and back support.
Customers who prefer a softer sleep surface can add a pillow top of an extra 2 inches of latex to their mattress for an additional cost. Avocado’s medium firm pillow top is available in both the standard Green and Vegan versions. Like the mattresses themselves, the pillow tops differ only in their materials, with the Vegan featuring 100% organic cotton instead of an organic cotton/organic wool blend surrounding the layer of GOLS-certified latex.
We’ll explore the Avocado Green mattress and the pillow top variant from multiple angles, including pricing, construction, benefits, and drawbacks to help you decide if either option is right for you.

Avocado Mattress Review Breakdown
The Avocado Green and Vegan mattresses are nearly identical in construction. Both hybrid models are 11 inches thick and fall between 7-8 on the firmness scale, making them excellent options for individuals seeking a firmer-than-average mattress. Both variations contain a strong support core made from up to 1,414 8-inch pocketed coils and an inch of firm, GOLS-certified Dunlop latex. The pocketed coils are zoned to provide additional support for the spine, neck, and other critical areas, as well as a softer feel towards the mattress’ bottom and sides.
Both models also feature a 2-inch comfort layer made from sustainably sourced, GOLS-certified Dunlop latex. This layer allows air to circulate, providing additional temperature control and preventing sleepers from sinking into the support core.
The Avocado Green and Vegan differ only in the materials used for each model’s respective cover. Each cover features hundreds of hand-tufted rosettes, which use ribbons to bind the mattress’ layers together, creating a sturdy product without using chemical solvents or toxic adhesives. Avocado also avoids using chemical flame retardants in its Green cover, relying instead on naturally fire-resistant, GOTS certified organic wool from the company’s own farm. While the Avocado Vegan cover does not contain wool, it is made from USDA certified organic cotton batting, which adheres to federal flammability standards.
Customers who purchase the optional pillow top for either model add an additional 2 inches of latex to their mattresses, bringing the firmness level down to a medium firm (6). The mattress topper also comes in Green or Vegan options. Like the mattresses themselves, the Green pillow top is made from a blend of organic wool and cotton, while the Vegan version contains only cotton.

Mattress Prices and Sizing
While Avocado mattresses come at a higher price point than many other hybrid models on the market, they enjoy a strong reputation for durability as well as sustainability. Both the Avocado Green and Vegan options are made using eco-friendly manufacturing processes and feature high-quality organic materials sourced from the company’s own farms. Although each model’s construction is slightly different, both feature identical price points per size. Customers may pay extra to add the optional pillow top to any size.
Avocado with Pillow Top
Hybrid mattresses generally offer less motion isolation than all-foam models. However, the Avocado’s five ergonomic zones help to reduce motion transfer, and reviews suggest that the mattress provides greater motion isolation than other latex hybrid models. While a memory foam mattress may better serve those who wake easily, the Avocado’s coil-based support core offers adequate isolation for most individuals.
An Avocado mattress with the pillow top add-on absorbs significantly more motion than the base model, thanks to its second comfort layer of latex.
With a higher firmness level, it’s easy to see why some sleepers, particularly those under 130 pounds, felt that the Avocado lacked sufficient pressure-relieving qualities. Other customers, by contrast, praised the model for its ergonomic construction, noting that the mattress’ zoned innerspring core offered exceptional support for pressure points in the shoulders and back.
While the Avocado receives overall average ratings for pressure relief than some other models on the market, experiences seem to depend on the individual’s size and sleep style. Those requiring additional comfort may prefer a body-conforming foam mattress, while the Avocado’s zones might be just right for others.
The extra layer of latex added by the pillow top allows for a bit more cradling to relieve pressure points, particularly for lighter sleepers and side sleepers.
The Avocado is a great choice for hot sleepers, thanks to its latex comfort layer and its coil-based support layer that allows air to circulate freely. Compared to high-density, body-conforming memory foam, latex does not retain nearly as much body heat, keeping sleepers cool throughout the night.
The Green and Vegan mattress covers also contribute to the Avocado’s standout temperature neutrality. Organic cotton and wool boast moisture-wicking properties, drawing perspiration away from the body while staying fresh. Both options provide natural temperature control and a soft, comfortable sleep surface.
The pillow top provides another layer of latex, allowing for a bit more sink. As a result, it tends to trap more heat around the body than the base model.
Thanks to latex’s natural density, latex hybrid mattresses tend to provide greater edge support than other models. The Avocado’s reinforced steel perimeter offers strong support from side to side, allowing users to take full advantage of the sleep surface without feelings of “roll-off.”
Notably, heavier sleepers found that the reinforced edges gave them the right amount of support while reducing sinkage and sagging.
The addition of a pillow top softens the edges a bit, making them less sturdy.
Ease of Movement
Hybrid mattresses typically provide greater ease of movement than all-foam models, which tend to absorb body weight and restrict motion. The Avocado’s reinforced edge and targeted support core work together to provide above-average ease of movement.
The Avocado contains more than 1,400 independent coils, while latex offers a floating sensation and prevents the sleeper from sinking into the support core.
The Avocado strikes the right balance for couples seeking bounce and edge support without the noise associated with many innerspring models.
With 2 inches of Dunlop latex separating sleepers and the support core, the Avocado muffles squeaks or creaking caused by coils in motion. The resilient comfort layer is durable as well as bouncy, working alongside the zoned coils to provide extra spring. Extra traction and reinforced perimeters mean that couples can take advantage of the entire sleep surface without sinking into the mattress or rolling off.
A pillow top model will be less suitable for sex due to its weaker edges and increased cradling. That being said, the pillow top still provides a better than average surface for intimate activities.
Avocado takes pride in offering eco-friendly products made without toxic chemicals. Many mattresses contain chemical flame retardants or petroleum-based polyurethane foams, both of which may cause unpleasant chemical odors. Although almost all mattresses emit some odor, off-gassing may be particularly strong when mattresses are shipped in compressed form.
While the Avocado is shipped compressed, its all-natural materials reduce off-gassing considerably. After unboxing the mattress, customers found that the “new mattress smell” dissipated quickly without becoming oppressive, particularly when opened in a well-ventilated area.
Sleeping Style and Body Weight
Side sleepers tend to place the most weight on their shoulders and hips, which can lead to uncomfortable pressure buildup. As a result, many prefer soft to medium firm sleep surfaces that offer extra cushioning and some body conformation.
While the Avocado’s zoned coils target pressure points, some side sleepers found that the mattress was still too firm for their liking. Side sleepers under 130 pounds typically felt that the Avocado was too rigid for their comfort, offering little give. By contrast, side sleepers over 230 pounds praised the Avocado for providing excellent support with minimal sagging.
While some side sleepers found the Avocado uncomfortable on its own, most felt that the pillow top added the right amount of give and softness. The additional layer of latex was enough to give side sleepers, particularly individuals under 130 pounds, the comfort they were lacking with the base model.
Many back sleepers benefit from a balanced sleep surface that evenly distributes weight and keeps the spine in alignment. Softer mattresses may not be supportive enough for most back sleepers, especially those who weigh more than 230 pounds.
As a whole, most back sleepers felt that the Avocado’s zoned support core provided solid support in the places they needed it most. Sleepers who weigh more than 130 pounds particularly appreciated the model’s firmness level, which allowed them to move about freely without sinking into the support layer.
While back sleepers under 130 pounds generally approved of the Avocado, some felt that it was overly firm, or preferred to pair it with a pillow top. The pillow top can give lighter back sleepers the added cushioning they may want, but at the cost of diminishing the Avocado’s benefits for sleepers over 130 pounds.
Like back sleepers, stomach sleepers often prefer mattresses that provide more support. Stomach sleepers tend to put more concentrated pressure on a mattress, so a bed that provides strong pushback helps to keep stomach sleepers from sinking too far in. As a result, stomach sleepers tend to prefer mattresses on the firmer end of the spectrum.
The Avocado is a comfortable option for most stomach sleepers, who benefit from the mattress’ firmness level and centered support. While individuals over 130 pounds gave the Avocado excellent ratings, a few lighter customers felt that it was too firm to be comfortable. As a whole, however, most stomach sleepers found that the mattress offered the right combination of support and softness.
The addition of a pillow top will likely allow lighter stomach sleepers to sleep easier on the Avocado. That being said, heavier stomach sleepers, particularly those who weigh more than 230 pounds, will notice a decrease in performance. The pillow top’s softer feel and extra layer provides more room for the bed to sag, potentially pushing their spines out of alignment.
