GhostBed Mattress Reviews

Nature’s Sleep launched in 2001 with the goal of creating the perfect mattress. After years of research, the GhostBed brand was born.

The flagship all-foam GhostBed Mattress was the first product in the lineup, but GhostBed soon launched other products, including pillows, bedding, bed frames, and three additional mattress models. The GhostBed Luxe is an all-foam model with cooling technology, the GhostBed Flex uses a hybrid design, and the GhostBed 3D Matrix is a technologically advanced hybrid model.

This review will focus on the flagship GhostBed Mattress, which is also GhostBed’s most affordable model. The GhostBed Mattress is an all-foam model constructed of three layers, including a layer of latex, a layer of memory foam, and a layer of polyfoam. It measures 11 inches thick and has a medium firm feel, rating at a 6 on the 10-point firmness scale.

GhostBed Mattress Review Breakdown

The GhostBed Mattress is a mixed-foam model constructed of three layers.

Two layers are used in the comfort system. First, a 1.5-inch layer of synthetic latex adds a more buoyant feel to the surface of the mattress. This layer is aerated with small holes to allow heat to dissipate. Next, a 2-inch layer of memory foam gives deeper contouring. To reduce the heat retention often associated with memory foam, GhostBed’s proprietary formula has larger cells and a gel infusion to pull away heat. The support core consists of 7.5 inches of high-density polyfoam to give lasting support.

The mattress cover uses a blend of polyester and viscose. It is soft-to-the-touch and somewhat stretchy to move with the mattress as it conforms to the sleeper’s body.

With a rating of 6, the GhostBed Mattress has a medium firm feel. This is one of the most popular firmness settings, and most sleepers are likely to find it comfortable. The mattress measures 11 inches thick.

Mattress Performance

  • Motion Isolation

The GhostBed isolates motion well thanks to its foam construction. Foam tends to absorb motion instead of transferring it across the surface of the bed, so sleepers may be less likely to notice when their partner moves during the night.

The layer of latex absorbs some movement, but the memory foam layer is what is particularly impactful. Memory foam’s slower response time and close hug contribute to strong motion isolation, putting the GhostBed Mattress on par with most foam models on the market.

  • Pressure Relief

The GhostBed’s two-layer comfort system conforms to the sleeper’s body to redistribute their weight and relieve pressure points. Latex has low point elasticity, so the top layer of the GhostBed spreads the compression from the sleeper’s weight out over a wider area. Memory foam has high point elasticity, so it compresses more directly under the sleeper’s weight. This combination of latex and memory foam gives similar cradling and pressure relief to many foam mattresses, but without as much sinkage as some models.

Sleepers across all weight groups and sleep positions are likely to enjoy strong pressure relief.

  • Temperature Control

While the GhostBed could retain some heat, its construction helps it maintain a more neutral temperature than some foam models. Latex used in the top layer of the mattress is already relatively breathable, and this is amplified with small holes for additional air circulation. The memory foam used in the second layer of the mattress could trap some heat, but larger cells and a gel infusion in this layer help keep it cooler. This may make the GhostBed a good choice for sleepers who like the feel of foam but tend to sleep hot.

  • Edge Support

Like most mattresses constructed of foam, the GhostBed’s edges are not reinforced. When an individual sits or sleeps near the edge of the bed, the foam compresses. This may make the perimeter of the bed feel unstable.

Because of its medium firm feel, the GhostBed’s edges are likely to feel sturdier than some foam models. Most people will likely feel secure enough to use the perimeter of the bed. However, people who weigh over 230 pounds may experience more notable edge sinkage.

  • Ease of Movement

Responsive latex used in the top layer of the mattress makes the GhostBed easier to move on than some foam models. This material has a springy feel and regains its shape quickly when the sleeper changes position. Contouring and slower response to changes in pressure from the memory foam layer may restrict movement to an extent, but this is unlikely to be problematic for most individuals.

  • Sex

The GhostBed is more responsive than some foam models, which may make it more conducive to sex. Thanks to its latex top layer, the GhostBed has a bit of bounce to it, which many couples prefer. While it is not as springy as most hybrid or innerspring models, it has a more buoyant feel than many foam models. The second layer of the mattress uses memory foam, which contours more deeply and provides some traction.

  • Off-Gassing

Any mattress may have some off-gassing odors when first unboxed, and the same is true of the GhostBed Mattress. Synthetic foams tend to hold on to manufacturing odors, which don’t have a chance to escape when the mattress is compressed for shipment. These smells generally aren’t viewed as harmful for most people, though some prefer to air out their mattresses before they use it. This can be done by leaving the mattress in a room with good air circulation until the smells dissipate. This generally takes between a few hours and a few days.

Sleeping Style and Body Weight

Side Sleepers:
Regardless of their weight, most side sleepers will experience balanced support and contouring when sleeping on the GhostBed. The two layers of the comfort system work together to contour to a side sleeper’s shape. Latex in the top layer relieves pressure with a resilient feel, while the layer of memory foam gives a deeper hug.

Those who weigh between 130 and 230 pounds are likely to find the medium firm feel of the GhostBed close to ideal. Individuals in this group should sink in just enough to take pressure off their hips and shoulders and keep their spines aligned. The GhostBed may be a little firm for side sleepers who weigh under 130 pounds, so they may experience slight pressure buildup. Side sleepers who weigh more than 230 pounds could sink in more than ideal near their hips and shoulders, which could make it harder to keep their spines aligned.

Back Sleepers:
The GhostBed provides an even plane that is likely to be suitable for back sleepers from all weight groups. Two comfort layers give cushioning and contouring, while the high-density polyfoam core limits sinkage.

Because back sleepers tend to need a slightly firmer feel than side sleepers in order to prevent their hips from sinking in too deeply, the medium firm feel of the GhostBed may be best suited to those who weigh under 130 pounds. The hips of individuals who weigh over 130 pounds may dip in a bit, which could put a strain on the sleeper’s spine. This is unlikely to be severe, but it may be more pronounced for those who carry extra weight near their hips.

Stomach Sleepers:
Since most individuals carry much of their weight near their midsections, stomach sleeping tends to put extra force near the center of the bed. The GhostBed’s medium firm feel is likely to suit most stomach sleepers. Its high-density polyfoam core should provide adequate support, while its two comfort layers give the cushioning that many stomach sleepers enjoy.

Stomach sleepers who weigh less than 130 pounds should get good support, but they may prefer a slightly plusher surface. Those who weigh between 130 and 230 pounds can sink in a little more, so the bed may feel softer to them. Individuals in this weight group who carry the bulk of their weight near their midsections may find it a bit harder to keep their spines aligned. People who weigh over 230 pounds may find they sink in too deeply when sleeping on their stomachs, which could put a strain on their spines.
